Each year, inspired by the Jewish tradition of tzedakah ("philanthropy") and tikkun olam ("repairing the world"), the Women's Philanthropy Division of The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties chooses and commits their efforts to a charitable program both locally and in Israel, and works throughout the following year to educate our community and raise funds for their chosen causes.
This year, the Division has chosen to focus their efforts on supporting youth at risk, both here at home and in Israel. The two organizations, Visions and Pathways, based in Somerset County, and Friends of Yemin Orde in Israel, both help children put the pieces of their lives back together. Their main goal for the children in their programs is to build their self-esteem and help them acquire the skills they need to thrive by providing: food, housing, counseling, education assistance, arts and recreation activities, career and employment counseling, scholarships and financial literacy instruction.
The Women’s Philanthropy Division, chaired by Laura Boretz, held a brunch on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 to raise funds for the cause—helping children at risk. There was vendor shopping before and after the program along with a silent auction. Graduates from each organization spoke on the great impact their respective programs had on their lives and explained how every dollar helps make a difference.

Thank you to our event sponsors, PNC Wealth Management, Janet Barson, Harriet Blank, Laura Boretz, Elaine Dunst, Alissa Fox, Amy Lazar, Linda & Allan Halperin, Wendy Offen, and Josh & Jessica Wang. A huge thank you to everyone that attended who not only learned about these two great organizations, but also made a donation. The agencies providing services to youth at risk in Israel as well as here in the local community are able to help those in need as a direct result of the gifts made that day.
If you are interested in supporting the Women’s Philanthropy Division’s effort, donations are still being accepted. You can visit www.jfedshaw.org/women, call Robin Wishnie at 908-758-2001, or send a check in to Jewish Federation 775 Talamini Road, Bridgewater NJ. The Women’s Philanthropy Division will hold another fundraiser in the spring of 2018, so keep an eye out for details!
