For Immediate Release
“Tzedakah and Zakat in Judaism and Islam: Helping those in Need” will be facilitated by Rabbi Debra Smith and Dr. Ali Chaudry on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the Temple Sholom, 594 North Bridge Street, Bridgewater, NJ. The fee is $5.00.
Both Judaism and Islam place a strong emphasis on helping those less fortunate. The concept is based on the idea that our own good fortune is a gift from G-d and we are in turn obligated to share with those who do not have. This can take the form of either giving money or giving time. We will compare and contrast texts from both faith traditions that deal with helping those less fortunate and see how both traditions teach their followers to incorporate the philosophy of giving toward the goal of helping create a more just society.

These discussions are part of a program called “Yearn to Learn” sponsored by Jewish Family Service of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. “Yearn to Learn: (Y2L) has been created by retired and semi retired persons looking for high quality, interactive learning experiences in small, local group settings, which promote stimulating group interaction, self exploration and interpersonal connection. For more information, to register, and/or to be added to the Y2L mailing list, please contact JFS at 908-725-7799 or Y2L@Jewishfamilysvc.org
