“Jews in the Arab World: Tolerance and Growth 7th-12th Centuries, CE” will be facilitated by Arthur Gertzman on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 from 1:00-2:30 pm at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC, 775 Talamini Road, Bridgewater, NJ. The fee is $5.00
Arthur Gertzman is a Biomedical Scientist, Medical Device Industry Consultant, Past President of Temple Sholom and President of the Gombin Society. Learn how the world is now confronted by a highly conflicted and dangerous situation in the Middle East. The relations between Jews and Muslim Arabs were very different in the first centuries of Islam, after the Arab conquest. Arabs controlled the Middle East and the vast area from Spain to India. Jews, Christians and the new Muslims got along reasonably well. Jews were tolerated, had legal rights, but were not considered as equals. Yet much was accomplished in the areas of religion, government, medicine and literature. Jewish economic life underwent enormous change. This talk will discuss what the world was like for Arabs and Jews in the pre-modern Middle East.
